Advocates warn govt with ‘Belagavi Chalo’ if demands not met

Bengaluru: Lawyers gathered in huge numbers on Friday at the Maurya Circle, demanding the implementation of the Advocates Protection Act. The Bengaluru Bar Association President, Viveka Subareddy, warned the government that various lawyer organisations from the state would take to the streets in protest if their demands were not met.
He also added that if the bill is not introduced in the winter session, Belagavi Chalo, a walk to Belagam in protest, will be held. Addressing media personnel, Subareddy noted that as Law Minister Madhuswamy also practiced law years ago, “he must understand the worries of a lawyer.”
He said that the environment for practicing law currently is frightening, and those who seek justice have false cases slapped against them. “The field of real estate has especially suffered due to the mafia,” he added.
“The fight to implement the lawyers’ protection act will continue, and we have confidence in Chief Minister Bommai. The struggle to make sure of the implementation will intensify in the coming days,” he said.
Home Minister Araga Jnanedra visited the protest site and collected a list of demands from the advocates. He also promised to have a discussion with the chief minister regarding the implementation of the act, and told media personnel that the lawyers’ association had agreed to withdraw its protest upon his promise.
