Bengaluru: Street dog menace seems to be on the rise in the city as an eightyear-old and her father were attacked by a street dog on Sunday night in Lakshmi Devi Nagar that falls within the BBMP limits. According to reports from the BBMP, the child Nurin Falak was out with her father Fakruddin late in the evening, when a dog chased and attacked her.
When the father tried to rescue the child, he was also bitten. The duo has received antirabies vaccinations. Talking about the incident, Manjunath Shinde, Assistant Director of the Animal Husbandry wing of BBMP, said that the child sustained injuries in her face and neck region which needed stitches.
The BBMP has reimbursed the cost of the treatment and has also provided Rs 10,000 as compensation. Shinde said that the dog was being fed by house owners in the vicinity.
Dreading that the dog might be caught by the authorities, house owners nearby have left the dog in a far off place, leading to the authorities with no information on whether it was sterilised or vaccinated. On the other hand, animal welfare activists have held the BBMP accountable and pointed towards lack of effective animal birth control measures.
Sujaya Jagadish, an animal activist, claimed that she had visited the Animal Birth Control centre in Rajarajeshwari Nagar and found it not functioning to its optimal capacity.
