Bengaluru: Two police personnel were suspended on Friday for allegedly extorting money from a couple in the city.
The action was taken after the personnel were found guilty during the departmental inquiry in the case, which reportedly occurred on December 8. Head Constable Rajesh and Constable Nagesh were patrolling staff attached to Sampigehalli police station in the city.
On December 8, the victims, Karthik and his wife were walking back to their residence on the premises of the Manyata Tech Park after attending a birthday party around 12:30 am when the accused cops stopped them and told them that they were not supposed to walk in the area after 11 pm.
The constables reportedly harassed the couple by questioning them about their relationship and asking for their identity cards. The couple showed them images of their Aadhaar cards on the mobile. At this, the policemen snatched their mobiles and demanded Rs 3,000 as a fine for strolling at midnight. They had also threatened the couple with "serious consequences" if they failed to pay.
The couple paid Rs 1,000 by using a QR code and reached home. Later the couple filed a complaint regarding the matter to Bengaluru Police Commissioner Pratap Reddy who ordered a departmental inquiry against the constables.
