Municipal workers on contract seek permanent jobs

NT Correspondent

Tumkuru: All contractual and sub-contractual municipal workers including vehicle drivers, loaders, cleaners and helpers have demanded the government make their jobs permanent. These municipal workers had earlier expressed confidence that the government would take steps to secure their services during this year’s budget.

However, they alleged that the government did not pay heed to their demands and instead decided to make permanent only the services of 24,000 civil workers who are working under the direct payment scheme of the state.

The disgruntled municipal workers are upset about the contractual municipal workers, like vehicle drivers, loaders, cleaners and helpers not receiving anything from the government despite repeated requests. To protest against the government's alleged indifference to their plight, various workers' organisations have now come together in Tumkur in protest.

Meanwhile, the CITU committee of the workers' union have demanded that the recommendations of the government committee formed during the joint strike of municipal workers in July 2022 should be made public. The government should hold a public debate on the committee's recommendations, it said.
