Bengaluru: Is former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah planning to contest from two assembly constituencies in the upcoming elections? Sources say the former CM has expressed his wish to do so which has sparked a heated debate within the Congress and political circles, with many questioning Siddaramaiah’s motive.

Siddaramaiah, currently Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, is said to have expressed his desire to contest from Badami constituency in Bagalkote district, in addition to another constituency which is ‘safe’. “He wants to ensure that he is not caught off-guard, and wants to be sure of a win in at least one constituency,” said a source. However, political observers suggest that it shows a lack of confidence in his own abilities.

“If Siddaramaiah is unable to win from a single constituency, it raises questions about his political clout,” said a senior political analyst. Others feel the move may be an indication of the tough fight that Siddaramaiah is likely to face in the upcoming elections, with the BJP and JD(S) both eyeing a comeback. The move has caused concern within the Congress.

“We need to project a united front and ensure that all leaders are working towards the same goal. Siddaramaiah’s move may send out the wrong message,” said a senior Congress leader. Siddaramaiah, however, has reportedly dismissed these concerns, saying that he is confident of winning from both constituencies.

“I am confident that the people will support me,” he said. The big question on everyone’s mind is whether the Congress High Command will permit Siddaramaiah to contest from two constituencies. The party leadership is expected to take a decision on the matter soon.
