Bengaluru: The police have intensified surveillance to monitor child-trafficking cases in the city after it rescued a 42-day old baby from a woman child lifter. On Saturday morning, Kalasipalya police arrested a woman, identified as Nandini, for allegedly stealing a baby from a house in Kalasipalya police station limits here.

According to sources, the baby, Aayath, daughter of a couple Farheen and Nadeem Sheikh, was abducted when she was sleeping beside her parents. Taking advantage of the open main door, the accused entered the house and stole the baby along with a mobile phone from the house.

As the couple woke up after a few minutes, they found the baby and the mobile phone missing. Worried, Sheikh alerted the jurisdictional police about it. Meanwhile the accused Nandini reached Gangamma Mariyamma temple in Okalipuram and met a priest, Bhoopalan.

The woman told the priest that she had lost her way and wanted to go to Mangaluru. The priest got her food but soon became suspicious about her weird behaviour. The priest called his friends who started inquiring about Nandini and found that she was lying. The priest dialed up the police control room and after which a team of police took the woman into custody and rescued the baby.

Later it was revealed that the baby belonged to a couple from Kalasipalya and the baby was returned to her parents. The police said that the arrested woman was a habitual mobile phone lifter. The city police have now formed several teams to keep a tab on incidents of child abduction in Bengaluru.
