Bengalureans stand in solidarity with protesting wrestlers

Bengaluru: A group of wrestlers has issued a powerful call to “act” against those who have allegedly subjected fellow athletes to sexual harassment. Their target is the Wrestling Federation of India's (WFI) side-lined president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers. However, their message was about more than just one individual; it was about the larger issue of women's safety in politics.

The group challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the issue head-on and ensure that women, including Olympic medal-winning athletes, are protected from sexual violence perpetrated by members of his own party. They hoped to spark a movement that would demand accountability from those in power and ensure that women's safety is never again taken for granted.

Their call to action was straightforward and powerful: Make a placard, light a candle at 7 pm on Saturday, demand #ArrestBrijBhushan, and join the Candle Light Vigil from your homes. The group hoped that by standing together, they could create a united front that would bring about real change in the country.

Advocate Vinay Srinivas from Bengaluru shared pictures of people standing in solidarity with the wrestlers by holding placards and candles. He pointed out that if Olympic medal-winning athletes could be subjected to sexual violence, what about other women? Srinivas emphasised that this is an issue of the safety of women all over the country and that they hoped to bring this issue to the PM's attention while he was in the capital city.
