DUMP GARBAGE BY ROADSIDE, PAY FINE

Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is on its toes cracking down on people dumping debris and garbage by the roadside in the city.

The drive was initiated after Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar rebuked BBMP officials who were struggling to address the issue of mounting garbage and debris dumped near lakes and rajakaluves in Bengaluru. Many roads in the city have become dumping sites for some residents about which the locals claimed to have complained to the BBMP officials many times.

The issue was later brought before the deputy CM who went on rounds of the city recently. The Minister took the concerned BBMP officers to task on the matter and ordered them to clear the garbage at the earliest and also to ensure the cleanliness of the areas. The minister warned that strict action will be taken against rule violators in all the BBMP zones in the coming days.

Following this, the BBMP zonal officials have got down to the field and started imposing fines on people who dump debris on the roadside and those who transport the debris and waste in vehicles to be dumped illegally. The officials have begun conducting operations in many places including RR Nagar and Nagarbhavi Ring Road in the city, and have also warned drivers who carry debris in their vehicles not to dump it on the road.

According to the BBMP, high amounts of garbage and debris is either dumped by construction labourers or employees of commercial establishments who would have been instructed by their employers to dispose of garbage in public.

Many residents and shopkeepers also dump garbage, especially in the night to avoid attention, they further alleged. The officials added that from now a fine will be imposed on the offenders if they continue to dump the garbage and debris by the roadside.
