Eggs, bananas back on menu of govt school children
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: The Congress government in Karnataka will provide eggs and bananas two times a week to students of government schools in the state from August 18.
The move, which has come as child welfare, will begin in the Mandya district at first and is likely to be followed in other districts later.
Addressing the press, Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa said the scheme will be extended to the students till class 10. It will be given along with the mid-day meal, the minister said.
While the previous government led by the BJP-JD(S) coalition in 2007 rolled back the scheme after facing backlash from the religious leaders over the eggs, the present Congress government has decided to go ahead, despite facing backlash, and maintained that children who have better access to better nutrition have better education.
