Bengaluru, Nov.11:

Within three days of News Trail publishing a story on how scores of trees and saplings in Benson Town were in danger of being stifled to death under a sea of gravel, residents of Benson Town and environmentalists saw the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities quickly removing the gravel that was put up around the trees and healthy saplings while asphalting Benson Cross Road.

“I wrote a letter to the BBMP Special Commissioner to direct the contractor to remove the asphalting material around the trees and saplings. But I have to thank News Trail for bringing this issue to the BBMP authorities’ attention,’’ said Vijay Nahant, an environmentalist.

“This was taken up, all thanks to your intervention via the news article. The pits made are full of cement which I am sure they won’t clean but I am so happy that at least they removed the asphalt,” said Sindhu Menon, a resident of Benson Town.

It may be recalled that BBMP Deputy Conservator of Forests had promised News Trail that he would direct the BBMP engineer concerned to remove the asphalting material around the trees and saplings on Benson Cross Road. He’s now kept his word! Well done BBMP!
