BBMP initiates construction of 46 precast toilets despite pending previous projects

Bengaluru: The BBMP's solid waste management division is forging ahead with plans to construct 46 precast toilets, despite the fact that 15 out of the 25 similar toilets initiated two years ago remain unfinished.
These 46 round-the-clock accessible toilets are slated to be distributed throughout the city at a total cost of Rs 28.1 crore, constituting Phase II of an ongoing project initiated by the civic agency two years ago.
Phase I originally called for the construction of 25 precast toilets at a cost of Rs 16.8 crore. Astonishingly, only 10 of these have been completed to date, despite construction commencing in March 2021.
The decision to embark on the construction of precast toilets was aimed at expediting the construction process. In addition to their swift construction, these toilets boast clean and dry facilities, sensorbased urinal flushing, and water-saving tap fixtures.
They are also equipped with odor-elimination technology, ample ventilation, and solar-powered lighting. Of the 10 precast toilets completed in Phase I, those at the National Institute of Unani Medicine, Sumanahalli bus stop, Mysore Lamps Factory in Malleswaram, and the Board bus stand are currently operational.
Additionally, two toilets each at Adugodi police quarters and Sarakki Lake, along with one at ITI Layout Park, are nearing completion, with 95% of the work finished.
The solid waste management division is also making strides in the development of 100 'She Toilets,' dedicated exclusively to women. These facilities will feature menstrual pad-vending machines, disposal units, and dedicated feeding rooms.
This project is currently in the tendering process, as stated by Bhimesh, an official from the division.
