BENGALURU TOP COP'S FIRST TIP TO CITIZENS-'Always be smarter than the cyber fraudsters'

Sharing his first cyber tip on Wednesday, City Police Commissioner B Dayananda briefed the citizens on how to avoid falling into "Frauds in the name of Courier Companies."

"Many such cases have been reported recently where victims have received calls from fraudsters pretending to be officials from Courier companies from different states," he said.

Sharing an example of the modus operandi, the top cop said, "These crooks inform the victim about a courier parcel which has links to the victim's Aadhaar details. After sometime, the victim receives another call from a scamster who poses as an official from the Crime Branch. In some cases, they scare the victim by saying that black money worth millions of rupees has been transferred from a bank account linked to the victim's Aadhaar Card. In other cases they may say that they have found drugs or other illegal items in a courier parcel linked to the victim's phone number," Bengaluru Commissioner of Police said.

The fraudsters take advantage of the scared victims and ask them to download an app on their mobile phone through which the crooks copy private data such as contacts and photos from the victim's phone and later use it to blackmail them for money.

"My advice to the citizens is, never download any unauthorized application on your mobile phones and do not share bank account details with any unknown persons. If you receive any such call, visit the website of the Courier company and speak to the Customer Support. In case you fall into a scam, immediately contact 112 or 1930 and alert the police. The victims can also visit the nearest police station and file a complaint regarding this," Dayananda said. (NT Bureau)
