Bengaluru: The state’s first vehicle scrapping centre will come up near Devanahalli on the outskirts of the city where vehicles older than 15 years will be scrapped as per guidelines of the Union Road Transport and Highways ministry, sources said on Thursday.
The scrappage policy was enacted on December 30, 2022, but the state had not set up any certified vehicle scrapping centre so far.
Now, the state government has approved the setting up of a vehicle scrapping centre by Mahindra MSTC Recycling Private Limited at Vijayapura in Devanahalli taluk.
According to sources, the order came into effect from September 14 and vehicle owners who wish to scrap their old vehicles can approach the facility. Vehicle owners who scrap their vehicles at the registered vehicle scrapping centre will get a Certificate of Destruction which can be used to avail of discounts when buying a new vehicle.
The vehicles to be scrapped should not have any police cases or traffic fines pending.
Vehicles older than 15 years and cause pollution should be scrapped. In the coming days, the state government plans to open two registered vehicle scrapping centres, one at Koratagere in Tumakuru district and another in Koppal district.
