Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said that the Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) would be held directly responsible for any failure in law and order within their jurisdiction.

The SPs head the state police department at the district level while DCPs are at the top of the chain as far as commissionerates in Bengaluru are concerned.

The CM argued that crime was a hindrance to development. He gave the directions to the police officers at the annual conference of senior police officers held at the office of the State Director General of Police (DGP).

“Our government will not wash its hands off by just taking action against the lower level officials. Action will also be taken against senior officials,” Siddaramaiah warned.

“Action should be taken by registering a voluntary FIR (First Information Report) against those who disturb the peace of society through false news and rumours,” he said, adding that “sensitive areas” should be given special attention.

The CM said that 230 new personnel had been approved to strengthen the Central Crime Branch (CCB), adding that new buildings would be provided to the staff if necessary.

He stressed on “peoplefriendly” law enforcement. Home Minister G Parameshwara, Additional Chief Secretary to Government Rajneesh Goel, State Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Mohan, City Police Commissioner Dayanand, CM’s Political Secretary K Govindaraju and others were present in the meeting.
