Bengaluru: In a shocking incident, a young man suffering from mental illness died after he jumped from the third floor of a rehabilitation centre in the city on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Shukoor Patel, 32, a native of Yadgiri district. It was revealed that he was suffering from Schizophrenia, a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally.
Patel's family had taken him to various hospitals and had tried different forms of treatment before coming to Bengaluru.
It was learnt that Patel was admitted to the rehabilitation centre in July this year. According to the sources from the spot, the incident took place around 11 am at 4S Deaddiction Centre in Kenchanapura Cross near Upanagara.
As usual, the staff had taken Patel for exercise on the third floor of the centre. However, Patel allegedly started behaving violently and pushed one of the staff, Omkar, in order to free himself from his grip.
Further he went to a window and allegedly jumped down to the ground. The sources added that the passers-by and nearby shopkeepers rushed to rescue him, but Patel died of severe injuries.
The Jnanabharathi Police reached the spot and inspected the body. A police officer told News Trail that Patel had sustained a severe injury on the head, chest and other parts of his body due to which he died on the spot.
The police are questioning the staff regarding the safety guidelines of the patients at the rehabilitation centre. A case has been registered regarding the incident and further investigation is on.
