Yeshwanthpur's battle with potholes: Residents take matters into their own hands
Bengaluru
The industrial zone of Yeshwanthpur, a prominent district situated in the northern part of the city, is grappling with several infrastructure issues.
These include the presence of numerous potholes, a conspicuous absence of pedestrian walkways, and deteriorating stormwater drains.
While the majority of this area is occupied by industrial facilities and commercial establishments, there are a handful of residential houses and apartments as well.
Throughout the city, riders and commuters often encounter an alarming frequency of potholes on the road. Some of these potholes are nearly half a foot deep, making for a challenging and dangerous driving experience.
The issue of the potholes has been plaguing this area for almost a decade. Despite several accidents and injured riders, there has been no action taken by the respective authorities.
Baskar, the owner of a mechanic shop on the main road of this layout, told News Trail that he has witnessed multiple people falling off their bikes on that stretch.
He added, “This becomes a menace during rains as the riders cannot foresee the potholes.”
Several employees who work at Texport Overseas factory in the area, face the impact of the plagued roads. Most employees allege that they have faced several issues owing to the condition of the road every day and the situation has not changed in the past few years.
Tired of filing several complaints to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the residents have taken up to resolve the issue on their own. Baskar added, “After several failed attempts, we ourselves have now filled the potholes with sand and pebbles.”
But the temporary solution does not seem to sustain the rain and monsoon. Despite numerous accidents and complaints, the locals have come to peace with the fact that there will be no resolution from the authorities.
Darshan Saravanan, a resident, told News Trail, “Sometimes I take the alternative route from Peenya or Tumkur road despite it being a longer route.”
He also added that "At night time due to fewer street lights and less visibility, it becomes even more difficult to travel and the chances of accidents increase."
