Bengaluru: The recent tragic incident near Hope Farm Signal in Whitefield, where a 23-year-old woman and her nine-month-old child lost their lives due to electrocution from an 11kv live wire, has sparked public outrage against the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM).
However, this is not an isolated incident, as BESCOM data discloses that a total of 70 people have lost their lives in electric accidents since 2018.
The data further outlines the occurrence of 81 accidents resulting from the snapping of conductors between 2018 and 2023. In the fiscal year 2018-19, there were 11 fatal and nonfatal accidents reported.
In 2019-20, 10 fatal and 3 non-fatal accidents occurred. The numbers for 2020-21 stood at 9 fatal and 3 nonfatal accidents, while 2021- 22 witnessed 13 fatal and two non-fatal accidents.
In the current fiscal year, up to October, 8 fatalities have been reported. In response to the public outcry, local residents and family members of the victims staged a protest, blocking roads in Whitefield.
Protesters directed their frustration towards Mahadevapura M L A Manjula S Limbvali and Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan, raising slogans against them. In connection with the incident, BESCOM has suspended five officers and issued show-cause notices to two senior officials.
Energy Minister KJ George has announced an ex-g ratia payment of Rs five lakh to the affected family, and a case has been registered at the Kadugodi Police Station, with an ongoing investigation.
The incidents in 2019, 2020, and 2021 further highlight the persistent dangers associated with BESCOM's electrical infrastructure.
Despite the company's defence of its safety record, citing a decline in accidents in recent years, it emphasises its commitment to preventing accidents through regular safety audits, employee and public safety training, and the replacement of old and damaged electrical equipment.
