Riya Gupta, an illustrator and a small shop owner, from the town of Lakhimpur Uttar Pradesh creates art around feminism and mental health. She explores botanical art style and combines it with typography and lettering.
1.What inspired you to make feminist art in specific?
I got introduced to feminism as a concept in college, before that I knew what it meant but never really understood it. During my college years, I met some very empowering women who didn’t follow the rules society had set for them, and that inspired me. Since then I have been reflecting and making art on feminism t o keep on educating myself and others about it.
2.How do you think art affects our society? Do you believe it is a catalyst for change?
Art, whether in the form of illustrations, stories, comics, movies, or music has always played its part in influencing public opinion that is why the status quo sometimes tries hard to censor or curb strong voices of artists. In the current age, where access to all kinds of art has become relatively easier than in the past, it holds even more value. As people are spending more time on social media platforms, which are filled with artists and creators, art is a strong catalyst for change nowadays.
3.As a young artist, what would you say are the challenges to your creative energy?
Honestly, I don’t think I face any challenges as such because so far I have got really supportive followers. Having said that, I am aware that there are always risks around making art that’s rooted in politics. But I just try to say and make what I think is right and what speaks to me.
4.How hard is it to run a small business that is rooted in a social cause?
Is your customer base limited because many choose not to associate with the feminist cause?
It’s definitely hard because of the limited audience. When I started this business, I was aware of how tough it could be to find customers for my products that are based on topics very few people relate to or are aware of. The growth has surely been slow but it’s growing and I am grateful for that. I have also been developing other sources of income so that I can keep on making what I want for my shop without having to worry about the revenue.
5.What are you currently working on and when can we see more of your art?
I am working on introducing some notebook designs and other stationery to my shop along with several other products such as mugs and badges. Being a small business owner and freelancer, sometimes I just can’t find the time to create new art for days but I love creating new designs and keep on doing it as regularly as I can.
