Safari rates up at BBP, zoos struggle

Bengaluru: After extended closures as the pandemic hit in 2020, zoos, wildlife safaris and aquariums in Karnataka struggled to stay afloat, especially after the second wave of Covid-19 induced a fresh lockdown. In order for them to overcome their losses, wildlife lovers visiting Bannerghatta Biological Park will have to cough up more for the safari. The zoo management decided to increase the rates after directions from the state Zoo Governing Council. According to a statement issued by Bannerghatta Biological Park, the decision was taken at a recent council meeting and that the revised rates will be put in place from January 1.

The money will be utilized in making additions to the management and to increase the staff’s wages. “The Governing Council of Zoo Authority of Karnataka has decided to revise the entry fee of the Safari at Bannerghatta Biological Park to sustain the increased expenditures towards fuel charges, feeding, maintenance, establishment and other recurring expenditure,” says statement.

According to reports, the rates have been increased by Rs 30 for the zoo and safaris. The charges for A/C buses safaris have increased by Rs 50. Ticket rates will vary on weekdays, weekends and other holidays.

Zoos across the state have incurred a collective loss of Rs 37 crore and safaris around Rs 10 crore since last year. On an average, they spend between Rs 17 lakh to Rs 19 lakh on animal feed and maintenance each month.

Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, popularly known as Mysuru Zoo, and Bengaluru Bannerghatta Biological Park are two major zoos in the state. The others are either small or mini-zoos and many are in the process of development.

The BBP is hoping that the revised rates will help mitigate their losses.
