Welfare Party of India raises questions on democracy's erosion before'24 elections

Bengaluru: In the run-up to the 2024 parliamentary elections, the Welfare Party of India (WPI) has raised concerns about the state of democracy in the country.

Criticising the ruling BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party alleges a systematic dismantling of democratic institutions, norms, and practices that have historically defined the "idea of India."

WPI highlights the authoritarian grip tightening over the nation, evident in the decline of India's ranking in the World Press Freedom Index.

The suppression of free speech, dissent, and the manipulation of elections, including concerns about the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), are underscored as alarming trends threatening the democratic fabric.

The party expresses deep reservations about the rise of aggressive Hindu nationalism, asserting that minorities and Muslims are being relegated to second-class citizens.

The glorification of one leader and advocacy for one-party rule are viewed as indicators of a shift towards authoritarianism. On the farmers' agitation, WPI stands in solidarity with the protesters, condemning the Modi government's use of brutal police action.

The failure to fulfil promises made during the repeal of contentious farm laws is decried, with the party demanding legislative support for minimum support prices, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations, pensions for farmers, and the waiving off of farm debts.

WPI also critiques the BJP's stance on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), deeming it a threat to religious freedom and cultural diversity.

The party emphasises the importance of respecting religious pluralism in the country. Additionally, the Welfare Party of India raises concerns about the Dismantling of Places of Worship Act, pointing out violations in lower courts.

The party demands the honouring of this Act by the courts, emphasising the need to preserve communal harmony and religious pluralism.

As the 2024 elections approach, WPI calls for united efforts among opposition parties to safeguard democracy, the spirit of the Constitution, and the foundational idea of India in the Lok Sabha elections.

The upcoming polls, according to the party, are existential and pivotal in determining the future of India as a democratic, secular, and socialist republic.
