Navigating the summer sun: Expert's Guide to skin care and protection in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: As the temperatures soar in Bengaluru, the city faces the challenge of protecting its residents from the scorching summer sun.
The rise in temperature calls for a heightened focus on skincare, and Dr Sunil Kumar Prabhu, a seasoned Dermatologist and Aesthetic Physician at Aster RV Hospitals, shares insights on how individuals can shield their skin from the harsh effects of the sun.
As the city navigates the sweltering heat, understanding the nuances of skin care becomes paramount to ensure a healthy and radiant complexion throughout the summer and beyond.
As the temperature rises in Bengaluru during the summer, taking care of your skin becomes crucial.
During the summer, opting for a lighter moisturiser can alleviate the feeling of heaviness and congestion on your skin.
Cleansing and exfoliating become essential to prevent breakouts caused by increased heat and humidity. However, the most crucial aspect of summer skincare is the application of sunscreen.
In Bengaluru’s intense summer sun, Dr Prabhu recommends a minimum of SPF 40 for optimal protection. Factors such as skin type, the amount of sunscreen applied, and reapplication frequency influence the choice of sunscreen.
It's a common misconception that higher SPFs provide significantly more protection. In reality, SPF 30 blocks 97 per cent of the sun's rays, and higher SPFs only offer marginal increases.
Reapplication of sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating, is crucial for effective protection. For individuals with sensitive skin or allergies, Dr Prabhu suggests sticking to mineral-only sunscreens to avoid potential reactions.
Beyond sunscreen, other sun protection methods are crucial for Bangaloreans. Seeking shade, and wearing long-sleeved clothing, hats, and sunglasses provide an additional defence against harmful UV rays.
Considering Bangalore's UV index fluctuations, it's important to avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Dr Prabhu says, “However, even beyond these hours, sunscreen usage is essential. Cloudy days should not be an excuse to skip sunscreen.”
People with pre-existing skin conditions like eczema or melasma should be particularly cautious, as sunlight can worsen these conditions.
Regular sunscreen use and avoiding direct sunlight are advised for such individuals. Dr Prabhu added, “Individuals working outdoors or spending extended time in the sun should use SPF 30 or higher, water-resistant sunscreen generously. Sun-protective clothing, including long pants and shirts, adds an extra layer of defence.”
Signs of sun damage
Recognising early signs of sun damage, such as wrinkling, pigmentation changes, and loss of skin tone, is crucial.
Seeking medical advice promptly can prevent further damage. Dr. Prabhu dispels the myth that a base tan provides sun protection.
Sunscreen and sunglasses remain the best protection against harmful UV rays. To achieve a healthy summer glow safely, he recommends using sunscreen with SPF 30+, gradual tanning products, and maintaining a regular skincare routine, including moisturisation.
