Interpol help sought to crack bomb threat email case

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda on Tuesday said that the officers probing the bomb threat email case have sought the help of the interpol in cracking the mystery.

Recently a bomb threat mail was sent to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and other senior officials, using a Proton mail.

Similar mails were sent to educational institutions and government offices last year in the state.

However all these cases are still under investigation and no significant development has been witnessed in these matters, Dayananda said.

Speaking during a conference, the city top cop said that "We have sought information through the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), routed via Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to Interpol. As it is Proton mail, we have sought their help," he said.

Headquartered in France’s Lyon, Interpol is an international organisation that facilitates worldwide police cooperation and crime control.

The police said Protonmail is a Switzerland-based firm focusing on internet privacy and an end-to-end encrypted service provider. They received the email from the ID "shahidkhan10786@protonmail. com."

The police said the suspect may have used the Tor browser, which allows the user to browse anonymously with a different IP address.

Several weeks ago when the police had requested some data, the search giant Google had refused to share crucial details of the mail senders.
