Bengaluru: MG Road and Brigade Road, which are known to be where the party people head to kick off New Year’s Eve celebrations, stayed empty this year too as the government ban on celebrations aimed at containing the Pandemic went into force.

As a precautionary measures, Bengaluru city traffic police closed all major roads, including MG Road, Church Street, Brigade Road, Indiranagar, Koramangala and others, for the public starting from 6 pm on New Year’s eve on Friday.

People gather in the heart of Bengaluru city at MG Road and Brigade Road to welcome the New Year. People on bikes, cars and on foot, normally converge in the IT hub for the New Year revelry. In recent years it also recorded a horrific night on New Year’s Eve when women were molested by goons on bikes during celebrations at MG Road and Brigade Road in the city.

“It is a good move by the government to ban entry and celebrations on these major roads. It is better for people to welcome the New Year at home or at small gatherings” says Dr Vikas, who works in a private hospital.

Kamal Pant, the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, has issued fresh orders, which ban large gatherings of five or more.
