Bengaluru: Bengaluru is an active participant in global environmental movements.
As World Earth Day 2024 on April 22, the Bengaluru Residents Welfare Association (RWA) is amplifying its efforts to combat the pressing issue of plastic pollution with its "Say NO to Plastics" campaign.
This year's Earth Day theme, "Planet vs Plastics," underscores the urgency of addressing plastic pollution and its detrimental impact on nature.
The movement advocates for a drastic 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040 to safeguard our planet's health.
Bengaluru RWA's initiatives The Bengaluru RWA has been at the forefront of the battle against singleuse plastics (SUP). Collaborating with the BBMP Solid Waste Management teams, the association has consistently advocated for SUP elimination.
Their efforts led to the inclusion of budget allocations for Flying Squads to enforce SUP regulations at markets, transport checkpoints, and factories, bolstered by whistleblower reports.
Over the years, Bengaluru RWA has partnered with BBMP Marshall teams in areas like BBMP South Zone to implement SUP enforcement drives.
Notable campaigns include initiatives in the Mini Forest area of JP Nagar 3rd Phase and Sarakki market during 2022-2023. R. Rajagopalan, Convener of Bengaluru RWA, emphasises a year-round commitment to environmental conservation.
"Every day must be Earth Day," he asserts. In collaboration with affiliate NGO Parisara Trust and young environmental advocate Poorvi N.B., the association has crafted impactful visuals and messages for residents to share on social media platforms, advocating for a plastic-free future.
