Residents not ready to apply for Cauvery water supply: BWSSB

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Officials from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) on Thursday expressed frustration, as citizens have reportedly shown little interest in registering for Cauvery water connections in the Stage V project.

The Cauvery Stage V is set to be commissioned in June this year, providing 775 million litres a day to the 110 villages incorporated into the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in 2007.

In their door-to-door campaigning targeting lakh new connections, officials have reported that only 48,000 applications have been received so far.

Ram Prasath Manohar, Chairman of the BWSSB, has pointed out that the recharge of wells due to the monsoon showers and a lack of awareness are key reasons for the low registrations.

“Officials will conduct another doorto-door campaign and increase awareness in the first week of June," he added. It is understood that residents are upset about being billed during a time of water shortage.

In March, when the city was experiencing a crisis, News Trail reported allegations of charges for water despite meters not moving an inch.

Some fear that registering for Cauvery water supply will threaten the water supply from the erstwhile City Municipal Corporations (CMCs) in the 110 villages now under the BBMP.
