BWSSB, ZP of action over potable water

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday fired off letters to several heads of city-based civic bodies warning them that if drinking water is found to be contaminated, they’ll face action.

The same letter was addressed to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) chairman Ram Prashath Manohar and Bengaluru Zilla Panchayat CEO Sangappa, warning them of 'swift action' if the quality of potable water is found lacking.

“All officials concerned must ensure quality potable water to the people of Bengaluru. The officials will be held liable for action in case of any water-borne diseases,” Shivakumar said.

“There are reports of water-borne diseases due to contamination from many parts of the state. The issue was discussed in a conference call between the Chief Minister and DCs (Deputy Commissioners). In this backdrop, officials must inspect all drinking water units and ensure their hygienic functioning. Frequent tests must be conducted for any water contamination,” the letter said.

The instructions come in the backdrop of a contaminated water death in neighbouring Mysuru district. K Salundi village in Jayapura Hobli of Mysuru district witnessed nearly 100 people falling ill recently.

One Kanakaraju (24) died and tested positive for cholera. CM Siddaramaiah had visited the village and announced Rs 5 lakh in compensation to the family of the deceased.
