Transport hub Gandhi Nagar battles traffic congestion, poor infrastructure

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Gandhi Nagar Ward 94 in Bengaluru, which hosts the transport hub of the city, is a blend of residential and commercial zones. However, this bustling locality grapples with various challenges that affect the daily lives of its residents and visitors alike.

Gandhi Nagar faces severe traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, leading to long commutes and parking struggles. There is no proper designated parking space in the area despite being in close proximity to the Majestic Railway Station and Bus Stand.

A parking complex, that was ready over 3 years ago, remained abandoned and closed owing to several reasons. If opened, it can provide a proper safe parking space for vehicles.

The bustling Gandhi Market area further contributes to traffic jams. Addressing these issues is vital for improving daily life for residents and commuters in Ward 94.

A resident says, “After several complaints, we finally got a “no Parking” sign on our street but people don't respect the sign and park right in front of the sign, what’s the point?” The ward also struggles with significant infrastructure issues such as drainage problems, overflowing garbage bins, and poor road conditions. These issues result in hygiene concerns, unpleasant odours, and navigation difficulties. A local traffic cop commented, "We can only do so much, but most people do not respect traffic rules; everyone is always in a hurry."

“The poorly maintained roads and clogged drains pose health risks, while the congested market area spills onto roads and sidewalks when it rains causing waterlogging. Going somewhere around the area when it rains with the waterlogging and traffic takes forever,” said a resident.

Effective waste management and regular maintenance are essential for improving living conditions. The ward is plagued by significant noise pollution, primarily due to the bustling Gandhi Nagar Market and the high volume of passing vehicles.

The constant din from commercial activities and traffic makes it difficult for residents to relax at home or enjoy outdoor spaces. Despite designated 'No Horn' zones near schools and hospitals, residents allege that the area is noisier than other parts of the city.

This persistent noise disrupts daily life, affecting sleep, concentration, and overall well-being. "The commercial environment, while beneficial economically, negatively impacts the quality of life of the residents. Imagine living with the constant noise of vehicle horns 24/7,” shares a college student and a resident of the area.

Although there are parks within Ward 94, many residents feel a lack of accessible green spaces due to the rampant construction of lodges and other buildings. This loss of greenery diminishes the area's environmental quality.

"The greenery is vanishing quickly, and it's affecting our quality of life," says resident Ananya. Pedestrian pathways are often inaccessible due to garbage and shops encroaching on sidewalks.

Overflowing bins and illegal shop extensions force pedestrians to walk on the roads, risking their safety. "Navigating the sidewalks is almost impossible," laments a resident, adding that “this forces us to walk on the road disrupting traffic and posing a risk to our lives.”

This clutter not only creates hazards but also degrades the area's cleanliness and orderliness.
