What the NEET UG 2024 results controversy is all about
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Amid the controversy of the NEET UG 2024 paper leak scandal, the Ministry of Education held a press conference on Saturday to address the widespread dissatisfaction with the NEET UG 2024 results, announced by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on June 4.
This year, the results have been clouded by accusations of unfair advantages and a possible paper leak scam.
What happened?
The National Testing Agency (NTA) declared the NEET results on June 4. However, a record number of students (67) achieved the top rank, raising suspicion. Additionally, some students scored full marks, adding to the concerns.
This chaos erupted after a major paper leak scandal in Bihar came to light. Thirteen people, including four examinees and their family members, were arrested.
According to Patna police, NEET-UG question papers and answers were provided to around 20 aspirants a day before the exam for sums ranging from Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh.
The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police, which is investigating, confirmed these details, as per media reports.
Re-exam demands?
Many students and parents are demanding a re-examination. They believe the grace marks awarded to compensate for time lost at some exam centres gave those students an unfair advantage.
Several passed-out doctors also joined the demand with some of them stating that if they had attempted the exam in this kind of unfair situation, they would have never become doctors. An open letter circulated online urging the government to intervene.
People are calling for a re-conducted exam with stricter security measures to ensure fairness for all students.
The Ministry of Education has established a 4 member committee to review the grace marks awarded in specific centres. This committee will submit its report within a week, potentially leading to revised results.
NTA’s response
The National Testing Agency denies any irregularities. They claim higher scores are due to changes in textbooks and awarded grace marks. Subodh Kumar Singh, NTA’s Director General said, “Over 24 lakh candidates appeared for the exam this year.”
Despite the issues affecting 1,600 students, Singh assured that the exam’s integrity remains intact.
Allegations have been made that inflated marks resulted in a record 67 top-ranking candidates, including six from one centre.
The NTA denies any irregularities, attributing higher scores to changes in NCERT textbooks and the awarded grace marks. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed to halt the results due to alleged exam malpractice.
While the court refused to stop the initial results, they will consider the PIL and potentially order a reexamination.
Uncertain future for aspirants
Thousands of students who took the NEET UG exam are left in uncertainty. The controversy has shaken their confidence in the fairness of the process.
The coming weeks will be crucial as the MoE, the Supreme Court, and the review committee work to determine the next steps.
