170-acre land for integrated solid waste management identified: BSWML

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: In their bid to establish an integrated solid waste management plant, the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited, the waste management wing of the Bruhat Beng aluru Mahanag ara Palike, has identified and inspected 170 acres of land owned by the Public Works Department at Gollahalli in the Bommanahalli zone, on Thursday.

The Chief Commissioner of BBMP and Director of BSWML had directed BSWML officials to ensure the land is handed over to the BSWML by writing to the district administration.

This is part of the solid waste management company’s plan to establish four such zones across the city, as landfills on the outskirts are proving to be costly to maintain.

On the other hand, Karnataka’s first waste-to-energy plant at Bidadi, established jointly by the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) and BBMP, will soon be functional, Girinath said during his inspection there on Thursday.

Reportedly, the plant will supply electricity to two lakh houses in less than 15 days.

This will also help solve the garbage issues in the city. The plant will produce around 11.5 megawatts per day. It is set up at a cost of Rs. 260 crore on a 10-acre land parcel.
