Police introduce safety rules for women’s PGs after murder
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: In response to the recent murder of a young woman in a women's paying guest (PG) accommodation in Koramangala, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike and the City Police department have introduced new strict regulations for women’s PGs across the city.
The incident, where a man entered the PG, committed the heinous murder and escaped, revealed severe security lapses. Consequently, the BBMP and City Police have mandated immediate implementation of new safety measures from August 2024.
Under the new rules, all PG accommodations in Bengaluru must obtain a licence from the corporation. PGs are required to collect identity cards and recent photographs of all individuals entering the premises.
Additionally, details and mobile numbers of residents, blood relatives and friends must be documented. To enhance security, CCTV cameras must be installed within the premises.
Safety measures to address potential fire hazards are also mandated. The consumption and storage of drugs within PGs are strictly prohibited. PGs must display contact numbers of essential services, including the local police station, emergency response (112), medical service (103), and cybercrimerelated services (1930).
First aid equipment must be readily available. PG owners are required to gather detailed information about their staff, including cooks, security guards, and other personnel. This information must be maintained separately and reported to the police.
For PGs housing foreign nationals, information must be provided to the local police station. Only admitted residents are allowed to stay in the PG, and any violations should be reported. Loudspeakers are banned from 10.00 pm to 6.00 am in accordance with the Supreme Court order.
PG owners must ensure the quality of food provided to residents and cooperate with local police, who will conduct monthly inspections.
Authorities are empowered to take action against PG owners or managers if these rules are not followed. These regulations aim to enhance the safety and security of women’s PG accommodations in Bengaluru.
