Walkathon held for national eye donation awareness

In observance of National Eye Donation Fortnight, Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital organised a Walkathon to raise awareness about the importance of eye donation on Tuesday. The event saw over 150 students from Aurobindo School, Rajajinagar, along with doctors and staff, marching to inspire community members to pledge their eyes and give the gift of sight. Flagged off by A.R. Sapthagiri Gowda, District President of Bangalore Central BJP, and Dr. Rajani M., Joint Director (Medical), Directorate of Health & Family Welfare Services, Karnataka, the Walkathon aimed to clear misconceptions about eye donation.

Students held placards promoting eye donation, symbolising their commitment to the cause. Sapthagiri Gowda praised the initiative, stating that "Eye donation is an act of kindness that can transform lives. The efforts by Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital and Aurobindo School reflect a shared responsibility for better visual health." Dr. Rajani M. echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of awareness in dispelling myths and encouraging pledges. "Education is key to bridging the gap and ensuring that corneal transplants are available to those in need," she said. With 1.99% of India’s population over 50 suffering from blindness, according to the National Blindness & Visual Impairment Survey (2015-2019), eye donation remains a crucial public health effort.

Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Bank, founded in 1975, has already transplanted over 30,000 corneas and continues to promote eye donation through campaigns and education. Dr. Rakesh S., Regional Head of Retina Services, emphasised, "Each donor can restore sight to two people, improving four lives in total. We urge everyone to pledge their eyes and help those in need." Following the Walkathon, the hospital has planned educational events and screenings to further promote eye health and eye donation pledges.
