Vigilance beefed up at Agrahara prison, post mobile smuggling

NT Correspondent Bengaluru: In response to recent controversies involving actor Darshan's alleged special treatment at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, police have heightened surveillance within the facility. A significant arrest was made with the arrest of Vijay, a remand prisoner accused of murder, linked to a mobile phone smuggling operation. Vijay, from KGF in Kolar, was arrested by the Southeastern Division police. Reports suggest he procured smartphones from outside the prison, allegedly with the help of jail staff, and sold them to other inmates at inflated prices. This operation has raised serious concerns regarding the presence of mobile phones within the prison.

Following concrete evidence of his activities, police acted swiftly to arrest Vijay. The investigation has since expanded to include two residents from Wilson Garden, identified as Nag (alias Nagaraj) and Velu, who are now in custody. Authorities are exploring the possibility that jail officials facilitated Vijay’s smuggling efforts and are investigating claims that notorious rowdy-sheeters paid large sums to acquire phones from him.

The situation came to light after a raid by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on September 15, resulting in the seizure of 26 mobile phones from the prison, some of which were found in the possession of Nag and Velu. The investigation aims to address the special privileges reportedly extended to Darshan and his associates.
