Rising two-wheeler thefts prompt police action

NT Correspondent Bengaluru: The city is currently facing a significant challenge as police reports reveal a surge in two-wheeler thefts. With approximately 8 million two-wheelers registered and an addition of 1,500 to 2,000 new registrations daily, the metropolis is experiencing an alarming rate of theft, averaging 14 to 16 incidents each day over the past three years. In light of this situation, the city police have issued a public notice urging residents to adopt comprehensive anti-theft measures to protect their vehicles.

City Commissioner of Police, B Dayananda, emphasized the necessity of integrating anti-theft technologies into vehicle design. “We are collaborating with automobile distributors to incorporate GPS systems and encourage customers to use wheel locking systems and high-quality handle locks,” he stated. These initiatives are crucial in combating the escalating theft rates. Between 2022 and August 2024, the city recorded a staggering 13,628 twowheeler thefts, with only 4,420 cases solved, highlighting the difficulties in vehicle recovery.

Recovery rates remain alarmingly low: 1,848 vehicles in 2022, 1,793 in 2023, and just 779 so far in 2024. Police attribute the rising thefts to several factors, including careless parking, outdated locking mechanisms, and poor lighting in parking areas. To counter these issues, police recommend proactive measures such as GPS tracking systems for real-time monitoring, improved locking mechanisms, and vigilant parking in well-lit areas with CCTV coverage. By implementing these strategies, vehicle owners can significantly reduce the risk of theft and enhance their vehicle security
