In a bid to fix the ever recurring issue of potholes on roads of the city, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has resorted to using steel slag to fix potholes, a pilot project revealed on Wednesday. Bengaluru’s woeful road infrastructure has led to slow movement of traffic, road accidents and many other horrors. This pothole fixing project is being executed in collaboration with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), a wing of the Centre for Social and Industrial Research (CSIR).

The material for this project is supplied by Bengaluru based Industrial supply company Ramuka Global Services. The pilot project titled 'ECOFIX,' which took place near Anjani Temple on Avenue Road involves filling the pothole with steel slag, generally considered industrial waste. What sets this apart from the conventional way of filling a pothole, is that the dehydration process is eliminated. This means that with 'ECOFIX,' potholes can be filled, even if they are waterlogged. The need for a tack coat is also eliminated in this process.
