Cake celebrations are marked by loved ones when one grows a year older or when one achieves a milestone in their life. Similarly, a cake celebration by citizens in Varthur took place, and a piece marked for the chief civic commissioner, and the elected representatives were kept aside. But here’s the twist. The cake was to mark one year of their demands to widen the S Cross Road, which landed on deaf ears. A year on, the road still sees accidents of all types, heavy water inundation and is still inevitably choked every morning.

This certainly has put civic apathy to new levels. The S Cross Road, which also has the Railway Underpass has constantly been on the lights for the wrong reasons - waterlogging, traffic and a plethora of issues for apartment dwellers in the area. In December last year, Residents had formed a chain with placards demanding the road be widened. It attracted the police and the placards were confiscated.

This year, residents protested at the T Cross road towards Vibgyor Road. The protest continued to the empty space at RUB. Although the cake-cutting may have evoked a few laughs, it has shown the sad plight of those residing here, according to Yogendra, one of the walkers. “We have seen 12 different types of accidents occur in the previous month. This has to be stopped at any cost!,” he passionately said.
