Bengaluru, Jan.10 A group of wild jumbos were stuck in a water canal for more than two hours and to add to their agony, villagers pelted stones at them near Hunsur taluk in Nagarhole National Park on Monday.
According to information available, around six elephants, most of them male, came to Penjahalli, Gurupura and Maaji Gurupura in search of food on Sunday night. On Monday morning, the pachyderms wanted to return to the forests but the villagers obstructed them by pelting stones and creating noise. Out of fear, they got into the water canal that passes through the village. They made attempts to escape from the canal but could not due to the slippery conditions.
Taking advantage of their helplessness, the villagers pelted stones and whistled continuously that scared them a lot. The elephants ran helter-skelter inside the canal but could not do anything. On receiving information, Forest officers from Hunsur came to the spot, pacified the villagers and drove back the jumbos into the Penjahalli forest.
