Bengaluru: With less than 100 days left for the NEET UG exam on May 5, 2025, aspiring medical students across India and abroad are intensifying their preparations. Over 20 lakh candidates are expected to take the exam, making the competition fierce. As the clock ticks down, it is crucial for students to fine-tune their study plans to ensure they give their best shot. Adarsh Benkappa Basavaraj, a student coach and career counsellor, shares some essential strategies to succeed in the final stretch.
"Identify your weak subjects and topics, and allocate more time to improve them. Write, write, and practice," advises Basavaraj. It is important to recognise where you are struggling and address those areas head-on. "Go over topics that have been tough to grasp, and revise the concepts repeatedly. The more you revise, the better you will retain," he adds. Regular revision of complex topics helps reinforce your understanding and memory. Taking mock tests is vital for self-assessment. Basavaraj explains, “Mock tests help gauge your preparedness and highlight areas that need more attention.” Regular testing also simulates the exam environment. "With less than 100 days, having a solid study schedule is crucial," says Basavaraj.
A realistic study plan with achievable goals can help you stay on track. Consistency is key! Utilise methods like flashcards, mind maps and self-testing to reinforce learning. "Active learning not only helps in retention but also keeps you engaged with the material," advises Basavaraj. Preparing for an exam as intense as NEET can take a toll on your mental health. Here are some tips for staying balanced. "Taking regular breaks helps maintain focus and productivity. Do not let burnout affect your performance," says Basavaraj. “Exercise and Meditate,” Regular physical activity and meditation can reduce stress and improve concentration.
“Never hesitate to seek support from family, friends, or mentors. It is important to talk when you are feeling overwhelmed,” advises Basavaraj. Harini, a medical student from Bengaluru, who appeared for NEET last year and is now enrolled in a medical college, shares her experience: "I made sure to take mock tests every weekend and stuck to a solid study plan. The weeks leading up to the exam were intense, but I made time for breaks, which kept me grounded. It is not just about studying hard, but studying smart and taking care of your mind and body." Logeshwar father of Abirami, a NEET aspirant who appeared for the exam last year shared, “As a parent, I always reminded my child to focus not only on their studies but also on taking care of her mental and physical health. The journey can be overwhelming, but having a balance between hard work and relaxation is key. It is not just about preparing for the exam; it is about preparing for the journey ahead.”
