Weinerberger India has gifted 19 eco-friendly and affordable houses to families belonging to the underprivileged class as part of its CSR initiative. Each house costing nearly Rs 7 lakh, is built with Porotherm Smart bricks manufactured by the company at its plant in Kunigal Industrial Estate. The recipient families belong to the BPL category and are associated with Dasoha feeding scheme run by the local Siddalingeshwara Temple in Yediyur village of Kunigal taluk where around 6,000 persons are provided free nutritious meals three times a day.

The scheme was taken up in January 2024 and completed in December. The beneficiary families have begun occupying the houses. Each house built using Wienerberger’s state-of-the-art walling material ensures thermal insulation (cool during summer and warm during winter) and also offers comfortable living conditions. Each home is equipped with a solar-powered water heating system, enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability. The 19 houses, each built on 483 sq. ft. are built on a plot of land overlooking Yediyur Lake. 65% of the land in the enclave has been earmarked for streets and green space with trees planted in two rows.

Talking to a group of newsmen on Wednesday, Mr. Monnanda Appaiah, COO of the company said, the CSR initiative demonstrates the company’s commitment to give back to society and create high quality, durable and natural dwellings at affordable cost. Each house provides two bedrooms, a washroom, kitchen, and a puja room with electrical fittings along with provision for portico in front. Flooring has been laid with vitrified tiles. Basavaraju, 38 who works as a writer at Dasoha Scheme said he couldn’t have dreamt of a house of his own as he lived off a salary of Rs. 12,000 a month with four members of the family being dependent on him.

He had been paying a rent of Rs. 2,300 a month for an accommodation in the village. Another recipient of the free house, Gangamma, 45, a single mother who works at the temple told News Trail, the house would be a boon to her as she has to marry off her graduate daughter. Nabanita Das, Head of Marketing at Weinerberger said Porotherm bricks have a life span of 150 years. Hemanth Kumar from the HR Dept said the beneficiaries were applicants for homes by the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Yojana.
