Large-hearted: Woman donates land for Anganwadi

At a time when people with crores of rupees hesitate to spend even a rupee for society’s welfare, an elderly woman from Medikere village in Channagiri taluk, Davangere district, has set an inspiring example by donating her land for the construction of an Anganwadi centre.
The donor, Sushilamma, gave up her valuable land so that local children could have a proper place to learn, showing rare generosity in an age where people often go to court over even an inch of land.
The Anganwadi was being run in a rented building. Moved by this, Sushilamma decided to donate 1,089 sq ft of her land for the new centre — despite her own family not owning a house of their own.
A new high-tech Anganwadi building has now been constructed at a cost of ?17 lakh by the Zilla Panchayat on the donated site and was inaugurated by Channagiri MLA Shivanga Basavaraj. The MLA and local villagers felicitated Sushilamma for her remarkable act of kindness. Speaking about his mother’s decision, her son Dyamappa said, “Earlier, the Anganwadi was functioning in a rented building.
My mother and I felt very sad seeing that. We wanted to do something meaningful for the children and society. So we donated our 1,089 sq ft of land for the building. The new Anganwadi is now ready — we hope it benefits the children. Even though we live in a rented house ourselves, this gives us immense satisfaction.”
The Department of Women and Child Development has appreciated Sushilamma’s humanitarian gesture, stating that if more people come forward like her, Anganwadis will no longer have to function out of rented premises in villages.
