Near-collision between 2 Emirates jets headed to India from Dubai
After a near-collision between two jets flying to India, the UAE has requested an investigation report.
The Hyderabad-bound flight was rolling for takeoff without ATC clearance, according to preliminary reports.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation in India has requested a copy of the UAE aviation authority’s report on a close call involving two Emirates jetliners on their way to India.
According to sources, an Emirates Boeing 777 on a flight to Hyderabad began its take-off run at Dubai International Airport on January 9 last Sunday when air traffic control intervened and asked it to abort the flight.
This is because another Emirates Boeing 777, bound for Bengaluru, crossed the runway just as the flight to Hyderabad was taking off.
Hundreds of passengers would have been onboard the two jetliners at the time of the accident.
The Boeing 777 taking off had reportedly reached a speed of over 130 knots (240 km/h) when it was asked to abort its take-off run, making it a particularly close call.
Fortunately, the jet was able to come to a safe stop about 790 meters down the runway.
There was a five-minute gap in the departure times of both flights, according to the Emirates flight schedule.
Both jets involved in the incident were able to take off after the incident.
According to sources at India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation, ”both are their registered aircraft and the place of occurrence is their airport, so it will be investigated by them as per ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization).” However, India’s DGCA has ”asked them to share the investigation report as and when available.”
The Air Accident Investigation Sector (AAIS), the UAE’s aviation investigations body, has launched an investigation.
The airlines were informed of a serious safety lapse.
The incident was confirmed by Emirates Air, which told news agency ANI about the serious safety breach.
The crew of the aircraft has also been subjected to an internal investigation.
The Hyderabad-bound flight was rolling for take-off without ATC clearance, according to preliminary reports.
When the incident occurred, Emirates had already dispatched its Boeing-B777 aircraft to the specified destinations.
Depending on the configuration of the aircraft, seating capacity ranges from 350 to 440 passengers. (Agencies)
