Connectivity benefits clouded by core issues

A highly sought-after South Bengaluru neighbourhood, Marenahalli grapples with peak-hour traffic, widespread illegal parking, and sanitation woes despite its prime connectivity

Bengaluru: Marenahalli, part of Ward 163, is a well rooted locality in South Bengaluru that forms a key section of the larger Jayanagar region, one of the city's most desirable residential zones. The area is known for its calm yet connected environment. Its layout reflects Jayanagar’s post-independence urban planning, with organised roads and a balanced mix of traditional homes and newer apartment complexes.

Strategically situated between Jayanagar and JP Nagar, Marenahalli enjoys easy access to both neighbourhoods' abundant amenities, from reputed schools and hospitals to vibrant commercial zones and green spaces. The presence of temples, parks, cafes, and community spaces further enriches its appeal.

Connected disadvantage

Connectivity is a major highlight with BMTC buses and Namma Metro’s Green Line (Jayanagar and South End Circle stations) of fering seamless travel across the city. Marenahalli enjoys strategic proximity to major arterial roads, including Marenahalli Road and Bannerghatta Main Road, providing smooth access to prominent IT corridors.

However, this connectivity also results in frequent traffic congestion during peak hours, driven by the high volume of daily commuters passing through the area.

Daily obstacles

One of the key issues troubling the area is the widespread problem of unauthorised parking.

“Several vehicles, including tempos and school buses, pass through this locality. But with cars and two wheelers parked along the roads, navigating these arterial routes becomes extremely difficult,” said Rakesh, a resident, highlighting the resulting congestion. Vehicles encroaching on roads and footpaths also severely im pact pedestrian movement, making it especially difficult for elderly citizens to navigate the area.

Despite being a largely residential locality, Marenahalli lacks adequate footpaths. To make matters worse, many sidewalks are blocked by construction debris, posing both an obstruction and a safety hazard for residents.

Sanitation breakdown

The area is plagued by several small and large dumping spots where waste is openly discarded.

“Despite repeated warnings, people continue to dump garbage here. We even put up a banner requesting people not to throw waste near our building, and it helped briefly. But now, the waste is dumped in a vacant plot in front of us,” said a resident near Renuka Prasanna Theatre on 21st Main Road.

He added that the large, unmonitored site, which stretches across the adjacent road, has also become a spot where people frequently urinate, worsening the hygiene and sanitation concerns. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanag ara Palike (BBMP) should address these pressing issues urgently.

In addition to problems like illegal dumping and encroach ments, the area also suffers from poor street lighting. Improving il lumination is essential to ensure safer and more comfortable movement for residents and daily commuters. Focused civic plan ning and stronger enforcement measures are crucial to enhance everyday life in Marenahalli.

With consistent upkeep and atten tion, the locality can better serve its residents while preserving its unique character.
