Neglect is not new to Yelachenahalli!
In Yelachenahalli, uncollected waste, power outages, and unsafe roads reflect the widening gap between civic needs and municipal response
Bengaluru: Yelachenahalli (Ward 185), known primarily for its metro station, is located in the Bangalore South Assembly constituency and comes under the Bommanahalli zone of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahan agara Palike (BBMP). As of the 2011 Census, the ward had a population of 44,695. Current estimates place the population at around 60,000, spread across approximately 23,000 households.
The ward includes several prominent localities such as Ilyas Nagar, Kanaka Nagar, Geeta Colony, Krish nadevaraya Nagar, Kashi Nagar, Anuradha Industrial Estate, Pratibha Industrial Estate, JC Industrial Layout, Bikasipura, Nanjappa Layout, and Chandra Nagar.
Struggling for support
Although geographically large, this ward has long been neglected and con tinues to struggle with a range of civic issues. For residents, options are limited, beyond calling BBMP or other civic helplines, there's little they can do to get timely action. "Whenever we contact the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) about drainage problems, they take their own time to respond," Vijay, a resident of Geetha Colony for over 25 years, told News Trail. He described the per sistent civic challenges in the area and pointed out how, despite having lived there their entire lives, many residents feel dis connected from the civic authorities.
“This telephone pole is very old and looks like it could fall at any moment. We reported it to the au thorities, and although a new pole was installed next to it, the old one was never removed. It remains a serious safety hazard, es pecially for children, senior citizens, and pedestrians walking by,” said a resident of Geetha Colony, 1st Cross, near Floral School.
Never-ending garbage issue
The garbage management continues to be a pressing issue in Yelachenahalli. Residents note that BBMP trucks fail to collect waste regularly, leading many to dump garbage at unofficial sites. While some of these sites are cleared occasionally, there is still no consistent or permanent solution from the authorities.
“It’s terrible walking past the garbage dump at the end of the road. It smells awful, and nothing seems to be done about it. Every day, more people throw waste there,” said a senior resident. She also highlighted the lack of proper footpaths in the area, forcing her to walk on the road, a risky choice given the number of youth riding two-wheelers recklessly, which poses an added danger to pedes trians.
Where development falls short
Kanaka Nagar appears to be one of the most disre garded parts of the ward, marked by congested lanes and unplanned con struction. Many houses in the area do not comply with BBMP building regulations, and the already narrow roads are further encroached upon by parked vehicles, discarded furniture, and other debris. Footpaths are entirely absent.
“That area clearly shows the stark contrast within the ward, while some localities are regularly maintained, others like Kanaka Nagar are completely overlooked, which only worsens the sit uation,” said Vijay. Residents believe the BBMP needs to pay greater attention to Kanaka Nagar, focusing on improving sanitation, enforcing building norms, and upgrading overall living conditions.
Additionally, several areas within the ward continue to suffer from frequent electricity outages, leaving residents increasingly frustrated after numerous complaints to the authorities. Despite tagging of ficials on social media in hopes of prompt action, these issues remain unresolved. The heavy traffic on main and arterial roads has further contributed to widespread violations of traffic rules.
Underage riders and youth often perform dangerous stunts like wheelies, while many neglect to wear helmets, posing significant risks to themselves and others. Without sustained inter vention and stricter enforcement, these persistent problems will continue to undermine the safety and quality of life for residents in the ward.
