Boost for Namma Metro network

Namma Metro network in Bengaluru is set to receive a boost on August 10 with Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi slated to open the 19.15 km long Yellow Line. The line will connect RV Road in the southern part of the city to Bommasandra in the eastern part with 16 stations in the route.

The line is expected to ease commuters’ woes by taking away heavy load from the traffic arteries which run choked perpetually with frequent snarls. With several work spots such as Electronics City attracting huge volume of daily commuters, it is likely to prompt them to switch to a faster mode of travel thereby giving up personal vehicles. It will even impart relief in terms of commuting time as the distance is due to be covered in 38 minutes.

Besides these, it will decongest the notorious traffic junction such as Silk Board, the Achilles heel of the traffic movement in that part of the city. Such has been the volume of traffic that during the last two decades, the crossover point has defied all remedies. The BMRCL authorities expect a daily ridership of 8 lakh commuters.

Constructed at a staggering cost of Rs. 5,057 crore, the Yellow Line will raise the length of Namma Metro network from 77 km to close to 97 km. However, its utility will largely depend on providing last mile connectivity through BMTC buses to inner localities. With auto-wallas being the law unto themselves, the BMTC will do well to introduce mini-buses for approaching the inner localities.
