Bengaluru creator JohnDarte’s inspiring journey from reels to real success
Bengaluru
Bengaluru-based content creator and fashion designer JohnDarte has built a strong digital presence with 1.4 lakh followers on Instagram and over 6,500 subscribers on YouTube. Known for his humour-driven videos and creative flair, John says his foray into digital content was never about fame but about fulfilling a childhood dream. “In some way, I’ve always wanted to do something on the internet. It’s been my passion since I was a kid,” he told News Trail in an exclusive interview.
“I love the lights, the cameras, and the energy of performing in front of an audience, whether it’s a live crowd or people watching online.” Born and raised in Bengaluru with roots in Mangaluru, John has seamlessly blended his love for fashion and comedy to carve a unique niche in the creator community. His online alter ego, ‘Johnndarte’, reflects both his talent and his commitment to exploring entertainment beyond traditional boundaries.
The start
John began his YouTube journey in 2018, initially posting cooking videos before discovering his passion for fashion. “I started painting on jackets because I realised it was a fresh idea and looked good, and no one else was doing it,” he said. His creations first gained traction through custom orders, culminating in a breakthrough moment in 2021. “I got the chance to design a custom jacket for Kiccha Sudeep’s birthday. It was surreal,” he recalled. Collaborating with the actor’s team, he created a striking gold-and-black hand-painted denim jacket. “That moment cemented my identity as both a creator and a designer,” he added.
A big leap
John vividly remembers hitting “upload” on his vlog documenting his meeting with Kannada superstar Kiccha Sudeep. Initially, the video received little attention, but overnight it shot up to one lakh views – a major milestone on YouTube. “Then slowly it hit two lakhs, and I got a message from YouTube saying I was one of the lucky few monetised with just one hit,” he shared. The viral success paved the way for collaborations with other influencers and renowned artists like Divine, Nikhil Kumar Swamy, and Dhananjay.
Slow and steady wins the race
Personal struggles soon slowed his momentum. “I lost my drive for a while,” he admitted. Meeting other creators and interacting in their circles changed his perspective. “I saw them earning lakhs from just reels. It opened my eyes,” John said. Motivated, he took a planned break, regrouped, and came back stronger. At the start of 2024, John underwent a major physical transformation to pursue his dream of acting.
“How you present yourself always matters; it leaves a lasting impression,” he said. Through strict diet and intense workouts, he achieved his fitness goals in seven months, with steadfast support from his family, especially his brother. With renewed confidence, he began auditioning and creating content that combined fitness, discipline, and his signature creativity.
2025 was the year
John started vlogging with his best friend Vineeth and a few others on Instagram under the handle ‘JohnDarteclips’, experimenting with different formats. “At first, nothing really took off,” he said. Then he tried a drive-and-chat style video – simply talking while driving – and it clicked. A humorous story about a friend sneaking an egg into a strict school went viral overnight, racking up five lakh views. “That’s when I realised ranting and roasting really connect with people,” he recalled.
This success helped him discover his signature style, blending humour, storytelling, and candid conversations, with his Bengalurean accent adding a distinct charm. John now carefully chooses brand collaborations that resonate with his audience. “I started promoting food brands like Sandowhich, and it was great!” he said. He explained that brands seek creators whose content fits their campaigns, while creators prefer partnerships aligned with their style and values.
Future goals
Looking ahead, JohnDarte hopes to transition to the big screen while continuing to entertain his growing online audience. “I want to gather talented people and create a feature film that’s a step up for me,” he said. His advice to aspiring creators is simple yet powerful: “You can always be better – improve your fitness, skills, and content. Stand out from the crowd. And remember, any moment is good to start. It’s not tomorrow,” he added, stressing the importance of strategy, dedication, and perseverance in building a lasting impact.
