Traffic, waste, poor infrastructure take shine off Kumaraswamy Layout

Bengaluru: Kumaraswamy Layout (Ward 181) is a well-established residential area in South Bengaluru, developed by the BDA in the late 1970s. Known for its peaceful, tree-lined streets and strong urban conveniences, it offers excellent connectivity through the Outer Ring Road, Kanakapura Road, and nearby Namma Metro Green Line stations.

The locality is a major educational hub, home to Dayananda Sagar Institutions, and provides robust social infrastructure with reputed hospitals, shopping centres, and parks. With mostly independent homes and low-rise apartments, it remains a preferred choice for families and professionals seeking an affordable, high-quality lifestyle with old-Bengaluru charm.

Traffic inevitable “There’s a lot of traffic here, and peak hours are especially difficult,” said Kumar, a resident, speaking to News Trail about the persistent congestion. He explained that not much can be done to ease the situation, as even road widening is not a viable option.

The locality sees a heavy inflow of vehicles passing through, resulting in frequent traffic bottlenecks. Heaps of irresponsibility Kumar also pointed out that unmanaged waste remained a major problem in the area. “Apart from BBMP garbage trucks arriving irregularly, many residents dump their waste wherever they please, leading to multiple garbage piles,” he said.

News Trail observed several black spots across Kumaraswamy Layout, particularly along BWSSB Pipeline Road. Near Noor Dental Clinic, a large garbage mound had formed, with heaps of waste, discarded furniture, and other debris. Even GBA garbage auto-tippers, overloaded with waste, were found parked at the spot.

“We have repeatedly requested the GBA to clear the area, but nothing has changed,” said Maaz, a resident, adding that the stretch of road is in ‘horrible condition’, posing difficulties for commuters, especially two-wheelers. Call to action Residents say significant infrastructure upgrades are urgently needed.

Many internal roads are uneven and riddled with potholes, while several buildings have been constructed in a congested manner, encroaching on roads and flouting GBA construction norms. Footpaths here are narrow and inadequate.

Street lighting is another concern. Large portions of the area remain dimly lit or poorly illuminated, with residents urging authorities to install durable, long-term lighting solutions rather than temporary fixes.
