Ilyas Nagar’s sanitation crisis reaches breaking point: GBA intervention now a must
Bengaluru
Ilyas Nagar (Under Ward 185) is a high-density residential and commercial pocket of South Bengaluru, strategically positioned near the intersection of Kanakapura Road and the Outer Ring Road. Its identity is deeply tied to its proximity to major transit nodes, most notably the JP Nagar Metro Station on the Green Line, which sits less than a kilometre away. The area functions as a vital sub-locality of Kumaraswamy Layout and is bordered by the more affluent residential blocks of JP Nagar and the bustling Banashankari.
Residents benefit from a mix of traditional and modern amenities, ranging from the long-standing Sarakki Market for fresh produce to the nearby Dayanand Sagar Institutions for education. While Ilyas Nagar combines a close-knit community environment with strategic access to the city’s southern commercial corridors, it also grapples with infrastructure and planning challenges typical of older, unplanned urban settlements. Pipeline work completed, roadwork pending When News Trail visited the area, it found that several roads in the Ramkrishna Nagar locality of Ilyas Nagar, which had been dug up for pipeline work, remain unrepaired for a prolonged period, posing a significant risk to public safety.
“Most of the roads were excavated for pipeline work and then poorly patched up. It has now been nearly four to five months without proper restoration”, said Girish, along with another shop owner from 3rd Main, 4th Cross. Apart from Ramakrishna Nagar, roads across several parts of the area are in extremely poor condition. The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) should urgently conduct inspections and undertake necessary repairs to ease the difficulties faced by residents and daily commuters. Unhygienic surroundings Another pressing concern that requires immediate attention from the GBA is the widespread issue of garbage dumping, littering, and poor sanitation.
Numerous black spots have been observed, starting from the 100 Feet Ring Road and extending into the interior areas. It is evident that both residents and local businesses, especially restaurants, are disposing of waste irresponsibly on streets, footpaths, and vacant plots. In addition, Ilyas Nagar faces several other civic challenges, including encroachment of roads and footpaths by commercial establishments, unauthorised vehicle parking, and residential buildings that violate GBA regulations. The GBA must carry out a comprehensive inspection of the entire area and take strict, timely action to address these issues, ensuring cleaner surroundings and improved living conditions for all residents.
