In the war, Trump has bitten more than he can chew
The Iran war is entering a dangerous new phase with the Pentagon and President Trump indicating a ground offensive against a defiant Iran.
Trump’s recent rhetoric has been mostly threats issued to the Iranian regime including the latest one on targeting critical infrastructure like power and desalination facilities and taking over Kharg island. Alarmingly, there is the Bushehr nuclear power facility run with Russian technology and support. Any damages to it might have catastrophic consequences not only for Iran, but the entire Middle East and beyond.
Rebuffed by NATO, humiliated by Spain, Germany, Italy and by his partner in the war, Netanyahu, who has declared Israel won’t be a part of the planned ground offensive by US, a frustrated Trump facing backlash at home, is truly out of ideas on how to exit the Iran war salvaging whatever remains of his ravaged image. To add insult to Trump’s injury, he was forced to allow Russian oil, and even remove sanctions on Iran, driven by global economic pressure.
It didn’t end there for Trump. A defiant Iran, despite all odds against them, has kept up the pressure on Trump, Israel and their Gulf allies with a barrage of strategic missile and drone strikes. The regime change after killing Ali Khamenei never happened, nor was there any public uprising against the regime, as was expected by Trump and Bibi. Most significantly, Iran continues its choke hold on the strait of Hormuz, and might escalate it on the..Bab el Mandeb straight. On expected lines, Iran’s axis allies Hezbollah and Houthis too have entered the war complicating calculations of the US and Israel.
Iran is not like any of the kingdoms and Sheikdoms who are vassals to the US hegemony of the region. It will prefer death to dishonour, go to any extent to protect its sovereignty, which is its legal right and fight on to become martyrs. Unfortunately Trump and Bibi had no idea of the Shia religious and cultural beliefs and the strength it has on the regime of Iran.
Trump is about to enter another Vietnam moment for the US, with his proposed ground ops in Iran. Will Trump be able to face the consequences of his actions for a war which was totally unnecessary, grossly illegal and started totally at the behest of Israel? Since the international atomic agency too has given a clean chit to Iran, that it is nowhere near building nukes, Trump and Bibi’s pretexts for the war on Iran are flimsy and sheer bullying tactics to promote American imperialism and Zionist expansionism. For Trump, and the world, the war has entered an uncertain phase.
