Karnataka woman bakes success in Bahrain

What began as a fleeting moment -- whisking together a cake for her son’s third birthday -- quietly stirred something extraordinary within her. In the gentle rhythm of mixing flour and sugar, in the warmth of an oven humming to life, a hidden passion found its voice. A baker was born. Today, in the Kingdom of Bahrain, she stands not merely as a celebrity baker, but as a storyteller of sweetness -- an artist who transforms simple ingredients into edible poetry. A trainer who shapes aspiring hands into confident creators. An author whose words inspire kitchens far beyond borders, each page a testament to her mastery and passion.
Meet Mubeena Siddique Maqbool, a gifted, bubbly native of Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada, raised in the cool climes of Mercara and later educated in Bengaluru, now based in Bahrain alongside her husband, Dr. Maqbool, a well-known surgeon. Her love for desserts, however, did not begin in professional kitchens or glossy cookbooks -- it began in the simplicity of her school days. “Even during my school days, I enjoyed making desserts for my friends, often putting together my own little creations,” she recalls.
“Their enthusiastic response encouraged me to keep exploring. I’ve always been drawn to trying new flavors and desserts, and over time, that curiosity evolved into a passion for recreating them and eventually crafting something uniquely my own.” Her kitchen transforms into a vibrant creative zone for most of the day, as she fulfills orders from a diverse clientele. Her customers range from members of the Al Khalifa family -- among her regular patrons -- to professionals such as doctors, management executives.
In addition, she also caters to corporate orders. From customised fondant creations and classic red velvet cakes to indulgent dark chocolate truffle delights and fresh fruit-based pastries, her offerings are as varied as they are exquisite. Cupcakes, cookies, black forest gateaux, rich ganache-infused cakes, and even low-calorie options -- all come together under her home-based baking venture, Melting Moments, which consistently crafts delicious cakes and specialty desserts in an array of exotic flavours. Armed with both undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Business Management, Mubeena’s journey into the world of baking has been largely self-crafted -- shaped not by formal culinary classrooms, but by deep curiosity and dedication.
She is, in many ways, a self-taught artist of pâtisserie, guided by instinct, discipline, and an unyielding desire to perfect her craft. “My journey began purely out of a love for desserts,” she says. “Over the years, I’ve learned through researching, experimenting, and refining recipes. I’ve spent countless hours understanding techniques, testing variations, and learning from feedback -- both positive and constructive -- which has helped me continuously improve and shape my style.” Her business venture, Melting Moments, now a talking point in Bahrain, was not born out of a calculated business plan, but from something deeply personal.
She says, “I began experimenting further with flavours, techniques, and themed designs, gradually refining my craft. What started as a passion shared among friends and family slowly grew into a profession, and that is how Melting Moments came into being.” She says, “My red velvet cake is a clear favourite among my clients, loved for its perfect balance of subtle tanginess and rich chocolate notes, along with its soft, velvety crumb. My chocolate cake is equally popular -- an all-time classic loved for its deep, intense chocolate flavour and beautifully moist texture that keeps people coming back for more.” When asked what sets her creations apart, Mubeena explains, “It is the balance of refined flavours, elegant aesthetics, and a personal approach.
While visual appeal is essential, I place equal, if not greater, emphasis on creating desserts that deliver a memorable taste experience. As a home-based boutique venture, I’m able to give each order individual attention, ensuring it reflects the client’s vision while maintaining a signature standard of quality.” Every creation from Melting Moments is crafted using carefully selected ingredients and a deep commitment to detail, resulting in desserts that are not only visually beautiful but also truly distinctive in taste and experience. Mubeena is also a talented author. She has written two visually appealing books -- Cakes, Desserts & Beyond and A Confectioner’s Secrets.
She shares, “I was inspired to write my cookbooks after noticing a gap in the industry when it came to supporting aspiring bakers. Many were eager to learn but often felt discouraged when online recipes didn’t work consistently, or were intimidated by the use of expensive ingredients. I also received many requests to share my recipes and techniques, which encouraged me to create something more reliable and approachable. Through my books, I wanted to simplify baking, help home bakers achieve consistent results, and inspire them to bake confidently from scratch.” Though she did not receive formal training in baking, she strongly believes in its importance.
To contribute, she conducts training classes for those interested in baking. She adds, “That is the most fulfilling part — the joy of seeing others succeed and knowing I’ve helped them grow and enjoy baking with confidence.” Mubeena is candid when offering advice to aspiring entrepreneurs: “My advice to home bakers trying to build their brand would be to never compromise on the quality of ingredients, as that is the foundation of everything you create. Invest in good-quality tools and equipment to ensure consistency and efficiency. Regularly test your recipes and seek honest feedback from family and friends. It’s also important to invest time and effort into marketing and branding, as presentation and storytelling make a difference.” Karnataka’s loss is Bahrain’s gain. (Book available on Amazon )
