Gadag transgender activist launches reflective belt campaign for stray animals

Hubballi,

In a heartening initiative, transgender activist S.D. Sinchana has launched a campaign to tie reflective digital radium belts around the necks of stray cows and dogs to help prevent road accidents during night hours. The initiative, launched on the occasion of Sinchana’s birthday, aims to improve the visibility of stray animals on roads.

The reflective belts glow when vehicle headlights fall on them, helping motorists notice the animals from a distance and thereby reducing the risk of accidents. Social activists and members of the public have widely appreciated the effort, describing it as an inspiring example of social commitment and community service. Speaking about the initiative, Sinchana said the campaign should not remain a symbolic one-day activity and urged the government to implement such measures across the State for the protection of stray animals and public safety.

Sinchana’s efforts have also drawn attention for challenging long-standing stereotypes associated with the transgender community. Instead of depending on traditional means of livelihood such as begging, Sinchana has acquired computer skills and taken up self-employment. During free time, she also assists at her elder sister’s vegetable shop. Apart from the animal protection initiative, she has actively participated in several social welfare activities, including distribution of ration kits to poor families through the organisation “Namma Balaga”.

Social worker Krishna H. Hadapada praised Sinchana’s work and said society’s perception towards transgender persons needs to change. “Transgender individuals are not merely seekers of help; they can become contributors to society. Sinchana has shown through her actions that they can serve society responsibly and compassionately,” he said. He further said the reflective belt campaign for stray animals is a socially conscious initiative that deserves ider recognition and support.
