A jar full of memories: Raju uncle’s homemade pickles win hearts
Mangaluru,
Amid the bustling streets of Dongerkery, a modest stall beside the Shree Venkataramana Temple is quietly preserv ing a culinary tradition that has been part of coastal Karnataka's culture for generations. Known affectionately to locals as "Raju Uncle's Stall," it has become a favourite destination for those seeking authentic homemade pickles and preserved fruits that bring back the flavours of a by gone era. For Raju Salian, popularly known as Raju Uncle, the venture is more than just a business. It is a lifelong commitment to preserving traditional recipes and sharing the tastes that once graced almost every household in the region. Speaking to NT, Salian recalls how he began the venture over three decades ago.
"I started this shop about 35 years ago, when most households depended on homemade pickles, salted fruits and preserved veg etables, especially during the rainy season. In those days, families prepared and stored these products as an essential part of their kitchens," he says. Today, his stall offers an impressive range of traditional homemade products. While the tangy and spicy mango pickle remains the bestseller, customers can also choose from lemon pickle, karanda (hog plum) pickle, tamarind pickle and a variety of seasonal specialties. Equally popular are the preserved fruits that line the shelves, including jackfruit, wild jackfruit, pineapple, lemon, gooseberry and mango slices.
Each product is prepared using traditional methods and carefully selected in gredients. The recipes have been refined over the years, retaining the authentic flavours that many customers remember from their childhood. According to Salian, changing lifestyles have transformed food habits, but the demand for traditional flavours has remained remarkably strong. "People today prefer ready-made products be cause sourcing ingredients and preparing them at home requires time and effort. But when these items are prepared using the traditional mix of masalas and age-old methods, the taste is simply awesome and unmatched by any commercial product," he says.
What distinguishes Raju Uncle's products from mass produced alternatives is their homemade character. Produced in small batches, the pickles and preserves are free from shortcuts and retain the freshness, aroma and texture that define authentic homemade food. Many customers visit the stall not merely to buy pickles but to relive memories. Older patrons often speak of childhood days when families gathered to prepare pickles during summer and preserve seasonal fruits for use throughout the year. Younger customers, meanwhile, are discovering flavours that have become increasingly rare in today's fast-food culture. Salian believes that modern tastes are gradually moving away from traditional foods.
"Unfortunately, the fast food generation is slowly losing touch with these flavours. Many youngsters have not experienced the taste of properly prepared homemade pickles and preserved fruits. Once they try them, however, they understand why these recipes have survived for generations," he says. The popularity of the stall continues to grow through word-of-mouth recommendations. Office-goers, homemakers, students and even tourists stop by to sample the products and often leave with multiple jars. In an age of instant foods and changing tastes, every jar at Raju Uncle's stall tells a story of tradition, patience and flavours lovingly preserved for future generations.
